U15 Match Data 2002-3
29th September U15’s vs Congleton (Home) Win 49-0 Back to fixtures 13th October U15’s vs Stockport (Away) Lost 17-36 With a number of new faces playing for Northwich for the first time it was unfortunate to come up against a well drilled outfit as Stockport. As usual Northwich were notoriously slow starters playing up a sloping pitch they soon found themselves in arrears with Stockport creating overlaps and using the slope too their advantage. Northwich did not help matters with players standing off rucks and mauls and being timid in the physical aspect of their game and with threequaters being slow in getting their defensive line out. Thus conceding 5 trys. Half-time Stockport 29 Northwich 0 Northwich initially continued with a timid approach to the match when play was stopped after an unnecessary robust tackle on Joel Shields by a Stockport player, Coach Mike Naylor strode on to the pitch gathered his troops together and told them in barrack room language to get into the oppositions faces and tackle them so hard that it would knock the teeth out of their skulls. This seemed to galvanise the Northwich side, they rampantly took the game to the opposition scoring in the left hand corner through Phil Jones bulldozing his way over the try line. Straight from the kick off Northwich continued in the same vein following a pick up from a scrum in field just inside Stockport's half from Ben Walton he fed new boy Christian Ormond on the right wing who passed inside to Matty Walters who took play 5 metres from the try line, quick ball from the ruck enabled scrumhalf Mike Preston to dart over for a second try. Play then seesawed back and too with Sam Naylor and Mike Bradley putting thumping tackles after tackles in. There followed a line out to Northwich just outside their 10m line the ball was shipped out too Bradley who broke clear, outstripped the defence and scored under the sticks this being converted by Pilling. Stockport in the dying seconds of the contest scored an unconverted try in the right hand corner. If Northwich had played in the 1st half with the same passion as the 2nd half the result certainly would have been considerably closer. Back to fixtures 3rd November U15’s vs Winnington Park (Home) Won 17-0 First half was neck to neck with the half time score 0 - 0. In the second period Northwich took full advantage of their opportunities with tries from: Phil Jones, Andy Ultrum, Ben Walton and a conversion from Sam Naylor Back to fixtures 17th November U15's vs Whitchurch (Home) Lost 36-0 Northwich were hoping for a good match against Whitchurch after there recent spell of encouraging performances. Northwich found themselves up against a very good team containing a large proportion of the Shropshire County Side. Whitchurch played to their strengths particularly in the forwards were they dominated throughout the match, they also pressurized Northwich capitalising on there mistakes, their support play and recycling of the ball was also very good keeping Northwich back pedaling most of the time. Eventually six tries were conceded. To improve Northwich must learn not to be intimidated by the opposition and not rely on certain individuals to win games for them, but above all act collectively as a team to achieve their aims, future coaching sessions will resolve this issue. Back to fixtures 24th November U15's vs Caldy (Cheshire Cup) Lost 10-24 Northwich elected to play against the elements in the 1st half and it was encouraging to see the forwards dominating loose play but were unable to turn possession into points, careless handling and tackling enabled Caldy to score 3 tries by their standoff. Halftime score Caldy 17 Northwich 0 . Northwich's first try resulted from a long clearance kick from fullback Joel Shields chased down by right winger Andy Oultram, Northwich regained possession and scored under the posts by 1st centre Christian Ormand. With the forwards dominant Northwich pressure resulted in a penalty in midfield 5m from the Caldy try line, the ball was quickly shifted out to the right wing Andy Oultram touching down in the corner. Northwich applied further pressure but could not cross the Caldy line. Once again during the final minutes of the match poor tackling enable Caldy to a score a final try to seal the game. Back to fixtures 2nd February U15's vs Oldershaw (Home) Lost 19-20 A keenly fought contest where the result could have gone either way, Oldershaw went into the lead scoring two tries, then just before half time Phil Jones crossed the line just to the left of the goal posts this was converted by Jim Pilling. Half time Northwich 7 Oldershaw 8 .The visitors again scored first, then Northwich replied firstly through Phil Jones again touching down this was followed by Christain Ormond grounding the ball under the sticks with Jim Pilling adding the conversion to put Northwich in front at 19 - 15. Back to fixtures 16th Feb U15's vs Whitchurch (Away) Won 27-17 Playing a reshuffled Whitchurch side Northwich elected to start the match playing into a bitterly cold wind, straight from the kickoff they pressurized the home side scoring within 2 minutes through Phil Jones touching down in the left hand corner. Half time - Whitchurch 5 Northwich 17 Whitchurch started the 2nd half the better side scoring two well deserved tries converting one to draw level at 17points each. Phil Jones completed the scoring by bursting through the Whitchurch defence after gathering the ball from rear of the lineout 15m from the Whichurch line. Final Score Whitchurch 17 Northwich 27 Back to fixtures 23rd February U15's vs Oldershaw (Away) Won 27-0 Electing to play up the slope in the first half both teams tried to play the ball wide, with the match evenly balanced it was Northwich who scored through Sam Naylor who peeled away from a rolling maul close to Oldershaw line touching down under the posts, Naylor then converting his own try. Then near to the end of the first period Phil Jones typically barged over in the right hand corner. Half time Oldershaw 0 Northwich 12 With the slope in their favour Northwich continued to move the ball wide, but spirited tackling by the home side kept Northwich at bay. Eventually Northwich scored with Sam Naylor again crossing the line. Two more tries achieved by Ben Walton and Joel Shields completed the score to cap a match dominated by the driving rucks and mauls by the Northwich pack, and also the gutsy performance of the home side who played better than the score suggests.
