17th October U10 vs Crewe & Nantwich (Home) Won 10-8 In a keenly fought contest Northwich emerged winners by one try. Return to fixtures 14th November U10 vs Whitchurch (Home) Won 6-4 Northwich Under 10’s had an excellent win against a very competent Whitchurch side. The game was very equal with both sides having good possession of the ball and excellent individual scores. The under10’s who have had many new players this season are developing into a very balanced side with good size and strength in the forwards combined with speed and tackling in the backs. With over 15 players to choose from the side was swapped around during the game with all the players having their chance on the field. The forwards led by Tom Price, Tom Phillips and George Jones made some fine charges into the Whitchurch defence and managed to recycle the ball for the backs on many occasions. It is the first year of fully contested scrums and not only did we win all our own ball but stole some of the oppositions scrums. The backs showed pace and skill in their running, with a determination that will break down many defences in the future. The areas for improvement from the match were a more fluid link needed between the forwards and backs during the second and third phases of play. Northwich took the early lead with 2 tries from inform centre Jack Bagnall (Jack has scored each week we have had competitive games), Whitchurch then came back with two tries of their own to level the points. A fine individual run from Tom Price who ran straight and hard through the entire Whitchurch defence saw Northwich regain the lead. This lead was then lost after 2 more great tries from the visitors, but a plucky performance from the Northwich backs saw them take three more tries, another from Jack Bagnall to get his hat trick after a good run and pass from Connor Kidd playing at scrum half, and two from New player Callum Guy who after moving from scrum half to fly half in the last period of the game outstripped the Whitchurch defence on two occasions to touch down giving Northwich a 6-4 win. The continued development and progression of the new players this season, combined with experience and much improved tackling from the more experienced players makes the Under 10’s and exciting team to watch, and a great prospect for the rest of the season.
Return to fixtures 28th November U10 vs Wilmslow (Away) Lost The u10’s took a full strength side to Wilmslow and played 3 games against the host. Although the team competed well in all matches they failed to win or score a try in any. A muddy pitch and damp conditions hampered the running of the backs and restricted our ball handling. The team need to focus on recycling the ball and retaining possession in the contact.
The team kept their heads up and continued to compete and play with determination throughout, but the Wilmslow attack and skills in keeping their own ball and stealing ours meant that they always had the edge. Plus points from the game include a new spirit player “Liam” who managed to get involved and make an impact in his first competitive game, and the improving Tom Phillips with strong tackling and driving runs. Return to fixtures 20th February U10 vs Manchester (Home) Lost 3-2 Northwich Under 10’s hosted Manchester on Sunday. It was a very well matched game with Manchester winning by 1 try. The overall score saw the Under10’s losing 2-3 in a game they should really have won. With two good individual tries, one from Hew Lewis and another from the prolific Jack Bagnall Northwich held a 2-1 lead for most of the match. The strong Manchester forwards dominated the loose play and made lots of ground by running straight and hard at the Northwich defence. Northwich backs lacked the strength of tackling needed to keep the Manchester attack out, however a good defensive performance from Matthew Evison-Clancey saw him make 3 try saving tackles. The game was lost by Northwich in the loose with second and third phase ball always ending up in a turn over, Northwich failed to protect the ball during contact allowing the strong Manchester runners to continue pressurising the Northwich try line. Plus points for Northwich were good performances from two new players Tom and Cameron who showed that although new to the game they will add to the strength of the team. Our strength of numbers with replacements for all positions and continued development of all players. Return to fixtures
