U12 Match Reports 2004-5

3rd October U12 vs Ormskirk (Away) Lost 49-26

Despite the first game of the season the U12’s worked well together, with the forwards – Sam Gough, Thea Breau, Mark Stone, Jamie Sweeney and Richard Bennett strong, driving back the opposition time and time again. However Ormskirk made better use of the ball they did win and to slipped though to win 49-26. Very good starts for Ben & Jordan who played their first game. Score/Conversions: Jack 2T, 2C, Robert Batey 1T, Sam Gough 1C, Melissa Beesley 1T.

17th October U12 vs Crewe & Nantwich (Home) Lost 35-0
Inexperience and poor commitment showed against Crewe & Nantwich as the visitors found too much space when they ran the ball with Northwich’s defence and tackling needing lots of work. Despite the run of play Northwich rallied near the end and were unlucky not to score a try at the end thanks to man of match for Northwich Jack Woolley.

30th October U12 vs Chester (Home) Lost 28-7 & 0-5
A gutsy performance from Northwich showed a big improvement over the previous game with Crewe. Northwich forwards gave as good as they got from Chester and won their fair share of tight and loose play but Chester were able to move the ball more easily to their backs than Northwich. Strong runs by Chester centres weren’t closed down and they were able to score four tries in the first match of the tie. Northwich continued to battle though, with great taclking from Robert Batey and lots of probing runs from Jack Woolley playing in a new position at fly half. Finally Northwich did themselves justice with a try. In the second game it was a much closer contest with Northwich unlucky to match the Chester score.
Some more co-ordinated play in the backs should tighten the defence and give Northwich the right platform to hold and beat ther opponents.

14th November U12 vs Ellesmere Port (Home) Won 14-0
The Under 12 turned in a gutsy performance in a scrappy match against new club Ellesmere Port to win their first game of the season. Northwich’s defense proved solid with good coverage across the field leaving no options for the Ellesmere Port team. Although Northwich were pushed off a few scrums the loose play was good and probing runs from Jack Woolley kept pressure on Ellesmere Port throughout the match. Northwich were able to capitilise on the pressure going over for two tries one in each half.

28th November U12 vs Wilmslow A & B (Away) Lost 40-0 & 14-0
Northwich fielded a number of very new players at Wilmslow and despite their enthusiasm were not experienced enough for a disciplined Wilmslow squad. Wilmslow were able to break too many tackles and win too much loose ball to give any chance of Northwich taking the game to the opposition. However Northwich improved against the Wilmslow B side and some determined work meant Northwich were close to scoring a couple of times. Man of the match David Jackson put in some marvellous try saving tackles.

12th December U12 vs Sandbach Drawn 14-14 & Warrington Lost 42-0 (Home)
Northwich stepped up their play after a recent disappointing outing at Wilmslow and were unlucky not to beat local rivals Sandbach. Warrington were a very competent outfit always running the ball and beating Northwich on the wing. However Northwich rallied against Sandbach winning more ball and scoring through Jack Woolley and man of the match David Jackson.

23rd January U12 vs Winnington Park Lost 42-0 & 14-0 (Home)
The Under 12’s lack of experience showed in this encounter with Park, where the Park players were always first to a breakdown and more aggressive in the loose and tight play leaving very little ball to run at Park with. However the team rallied in the second match playing a much improved and tighter style, impressive in his first match was Nathan Jefford who won man of the match award. Also playing well were Rick Garnett, David Jackson and Chris Van Deursen

6th February U12 vs Chester Lost 49-0 & 21-7 (Away)
Despite the scoreline Northwich U12’s put in their best performance of the season. The Northwich pack were always fighting for the ball and won much of the scrums and line outs with good interplay between them nearly leading to a number of tries. Well done, Mark Stone, Richard Bennett, Gavin Vaughan, David Jackson and Richard Garnett. After the initial shock of Chester running at them Northwich settled and we saw a keenly contested match. Northwich weren’t able to cope with the wide running of the Chester backs but never got disheartened and in the second match scored in the corner after a great well timed pass by Jack Woolley, allowed the winger to score after sustained forward efforts forced a scrum in midfield. Man of the match went to Ollie Townend out on the wing, stopped players easily twice his size on many occasions saving a number of tries with classic tackling.

20th February U12 vs Manchester Lost 28-7 (Home)
Northwich U12’s performed well again in this scrappy encounter and were unlucky not to score two tries. Lack of concentration allowed Manchester to sneak a couple of early scores but otherwise were solid up front with some excellent maul play and defensive tackling. Special mention goes to Robert Batey who kept a tight defence, Jack Woolley who made a number of breaks but just couldn’t offload the ball to release his team mates and David Jackson who scored one try and would have scored a second had he not ran out of the deadball area. Another encouraging performance leading up to the Cheshire cup in March.

6th March U12 vs Lymm Lost 42-7 (Away)
Northwich U12’s managed to hold their overall shape and battled well with some good ruck and maul ball, but didn’t win or retain enough ball to challenge Lymm. Good performances from Nathan Jefford and Robert Batey in the backs helped stop a good number of Lymm attacks. Good runs from David Jackson and Nathan Jefford showed Lymm had weakenesses and late in the game Northwich crossed the line in the corner with a try from Ben Christie his first try for the club.
