Under 12's 2002-3

Under 12’s Page
Welcome to the Under 12’s team page. This is the part of the new Northwich RUFC club site dedicated to news, views and information about the Under 12’s teams.
Like the rest of this site, the information included here will change and improve in time. I hope soon for example to include team photographs, match results and match reports. For the moment though we’re concentrating on accurate fixture details and for away matches, directions to the opposition club (click on the directions label in the Result & report column in the fixture list or link to their own club web page via the link in the Opponents column).
Like you all I’m looking forward to the start of the new season, to playing again and training to improve the teams’ skills and to help everyone enjoy their rugby more. Don’t forget to tell your friends about your team as well, you can give them this web site address and better still, encourage them to come down on Sunday mornings at 10.30am for training. Like last season all ‘newcomers’ can come along during September for free, all they need is some boots. Also look out this year for joint activities with Sale Sharks and Sport Cheshire. We are one of Sale’s partner clubs this season and can expect regular visits by our adopted Sale player, by Sharkie their mascot and special offers on tickets.

The new season will start with Registration Day on Sunday September 1st. Come down in your kit for training with your parents and after we’ll be organising a barbeque. You should receive a registration for by post late in August, please bring it along on the day and of course if you have any questions beforehand or during the season, please feel free to contact me as always using my details below.

End of Season report
This season could be summarised in typical school report terminology "a good year's work however with a little more effort could do better".
Typically the squad are slow starters, they warm up and as the first game progresses they get better and better, this is an area to be worked on both as a team and individually. This slow start has lead to an up and down season in terms of form with some games lost that they should have won easily and others won with ease.
The highlight of the year was the winning of the Cheshire Cup Plate Competition. After narrowly going out in the league stages the boys had the choice, do they give everybody a run out or go for broke. As they ran out plate winners you can see what their decision was, the galling thing was that the eventual winners were Wilmslow whom we beat a few weeks earlier - one to put down to experience.
The season finished with a small tournament against a touring side from Worcester with Crewe & Nantwich and Winnington Park. Northwich played 2 games against the tourists loosing both but gaining valuable experience – games that probably came too late in the season for them.
The squad continues to grow and develop whilst maintaining the nucleus from previous seasons; this is good news for next season when we start to play 15 a side.

Thanks from Ashley & Geoff to the Ugly Sisters, plank & plonker, Rob and his brain (both old and new), ant and all the others that on occasions listen to what we are saying.

Special thanks go to Andy, Peter and all the parents and helpers who have supported the team throughout the season. A final big thanks from Ashley and Geoff to the Clive Norling of Northwich Rugby Club Simon Jones for his refereeing through out the season.

Last Season’s Report (as Under 11’s)
The under 11's are an enigma to me. Full of great potential yet very LAZY!!!. Week after week, we play teams we should beat easily, but each time, we struggle to win, and mostly lose the first game. The first games have tended to be wake up calls, because when they play the second matches, we are like a team possessed, playing great rugby and beating sides handsomely. But why put the coaches, and parents, through the agony of the first games? The squad has largely been the same with a couple of new faces who have gelled well with the existing players, and progress generally has been consistent. There has been the disappointment of not progressing in the Cheshire Tournament at Chester where the lads won two matches and drew one, with not even the opportunity to qualify for the Plate competition! Anyway, the disappointment was soon lifted when at the third attempt, the Under 11's squad succeeded in winning the Hoylake Sevens. They had been Runners Up two years previously, therefore, was a case of third time lucky. The Final was an emphatic victory for Northwich by 40 points to 0 against our hosts - Hoylake. 2 hat tricks (Sam Jackson & Joel Barber) were recorded in achieving this victory—which was all the sweeter as one young Hoylake lad was heard earlier in the day saying how they were sorry that they were not in Northwich’s group as they felt that would be an easy win for them!
The season ended with the lad reaching the semi finals of the Rochdale Tournament. Because I have taken over the Under 12's earlier in the season, I handed the Under 11's reigns to Ashley Barber, Geoff Dodd, Andy Hallwood and Peter Jackson, and I would like to say a big thank you to them, and all the parents, for their support during the season.
