October 12th U14’s vs Crewe & Nantwich (Home) Won 19-15
Northwich managed a win by four points against a good Crewe and Nantwich side. The wins in previous seasons against Crewe and Nantwich led to Northwich entering this match with a level of complacency that could have cost them the game. C&N started brightly and their pack dominated Northwich throughout the encounter winning the majority of the set pieces on their ball and ours, any 50:50 ball was fully contested by C&N with Northwich looking on as spectators in the rucks and mauls. The C&N backs took advantage of the amount and good quality of the ball they received to run at Northwich at every opportunity. A lack of defensive co-ordination saw C&N make ground in every attack with only the scrambled defense and determination of Tom Price stopping them from scoring more.

Northwich never got back on level terms with C&N after our lazy start and our only reply to the good team play of C&N was to rely on two dependable runners to try and make the difference. The Northwich back row was slow and sluggish in both halves of the game, with the second row players Chad Hickson and Eddie Stansfeld playing and acting more like back rows than the 6 players who were given the chance to shine at either No8 or flanker. Northwich did win this match, by virtue of 3 tries and two conversions to C&N three tries, however the general level of team play was poor from Northwich, a lot of un-committed players take no responsibility and rely solely on two or three players to make all the tackles and score all the points.

The game was soured even further by the dissent and lack of control by the Northwich players. Many penalties were given away for poor rucking skills and high tackles, further penalties could have been awarded for constant offside. Adding to this general lack of playing discipline was the way in which the referee was constantly challenged and argued with over his decisions, the most ignominious event occurring after a C&N try when 2 Northwich players harangued the referee resulting in a penalty for C&N from the re-start rather than a Northwich kick.

Notable performances for Northwich in this match were seen from Fergus on the wing who is improving his defense in every match, Chad Hickson who tackled well (If a little high on occasions) through out the match and Tom Price who tackled well and ran hard for the full game
