U8’s Match Reports 2009-10
October 4th U8’s vs Crewe & Nantwich (Away) Won 9-7 We all rocked up at Crewe and Nantwich RUFC on a bright sunny Sunday morning for the first match of the season, (hangovers not too apparent!). The team consisted of Bradley, Nathan, Connor, Niall, Thomas, Ned, Aaron, Elliot, Imy and Luke with Bradley being nominated as Captain and they were all raring to go. The first game was a draw with the result being 2-2. ( Nathan scored the 2 tries )
The team won the second game 3-0 with Connor making some fantastic runs, scoring the 3 tries of the game. Passing was greatly improved from last year and everyone was doing some excellent tagging. The team lost the 3rd game 4-5 but the game was very close with Nathan scoring 3 tries and Imy 1 try. In all games the tries were only made possible by the fantastic support from the rest of the team. The team tried out the 'Sonic Boom' which Karen has been getting them to perfect. Unfortunately they are all bringing it home with them !!!
Crewe and Nantwich were excellent hosts offering help and support to both teams. Congratulations to all.

October 11th U8’s vs Mold (Home) Draw 7-7 It was a dull and drizzly Sunday morning, but it was good to see good numbers turn up and the parents had the tea and coffee flowing to keep spirits up. The team consisted of, Bradley, Nathan, Connor, Charlie, Ben, Aaron, Imy, Damien, Niall, Luke, Ned, Thomas, Anastasia and Elliott. Luke was captain for the day and demonstrated good leadership with some great runs. There was some great passing and tagging from both teams, which led to a fast and furious game and especially well done to Damien who did some fantastic tagging. Tries were scored by, Bradley (2), Ben (2), Nathan (1), Luke (1) and Aaron (1).
New players this season, Charlie, Elliott, Imy, Thomas and Anastasia are developing well within the game and assisted and supported the team with getting the ball to others to enable the tries to be scored and all played a good part in helping to defend the game. Well done to all and thanks to Mold for travelling such a long way and giving Northwich a good, but fair game, ending in a 7-7 draw.

October 18th U8’s vs Bromsgrove (Away) Lost 14-6 A fine sunny morning saw the ‘breaker breaker ten six’ convoy of the Northwich Under 8’s and the Northwich Under 11’s depart from Moss Farm for ‘The Black Country’.
The convoy duly arrived in Bromsgrove at various intervals namely due to some parents heavy right feet and some parents inability to navigate even with a sat nav!!!! (Obviously according to the male in question it was female co-pilot error!!!!!) A quick game of scarecrow tag, followed by some practice at scoring tries in the dead ball zone of an ongoing game saw us warmed up and raring to go. Imogen Heath was tasked as Captain for the day. The band of merry eight were in fighting spirit and took it to ‘The Grove’ in the first of 3 matches. The match was fast and furious with some excellent tagging from Imogen. Aaron saw a very slim opportunity on the wing and scored a try right in the corner. Final score 3-1 to Bromsgrove.
The second match was a very close fought contest with Northwich looking to get a win. Ben had a storming game, managing to dodge all of ‘The Grove’ players on two separate occasions to make it to the try line. Aaron (who needs glue on his right hand to make it stick to the ball!!!!!!) also managed to score a try and we had a debut try from Anastasia Heath. Closely fought, we came out 5-4 the losers.
The third game saw a tired Northwich side take to the pitch. Although desperate for food, (the prospect of chips and ice cream when you are full of a cold is VERY appealing!!!), we fought on bravely! With our honour upheld, in a great display of sportsmanship from the Northwich side, (no penalties for slapping in our camp!!!!), we had the final try of the day from Ben. Final score 6-1 to Bromsgrove
Captain Imogen was awesome at organising the tunnel after the game to clap off the opposition and of course we came out winners at the, ‘3 cheers for Bromsgrove’, as we took our sonic boom pitch with us!!!
Sunday dinner is on Imogen’s dad next week as he took great pleasure in informing me that he was having his cooked for him this week!! Mr Heath we know where you live!!!!

October 25th U8’s vs Lymm (Away) Lost 15-8 & Winnington Park Lost 5-1 With the clocks going back and some of us getting an extra hour in bed, (and some of us killing an extra hour before we got to the pitch!!!), our Sunday away fixture at Lymm turned out to be a Tri-Nations tournament against Lymm and Winnington Park due to Winnington Parks fixture being cancelled at the last minute………. (how dare they impinge on our fixture!!!). The training session before the matches saw the coach trying to persuade the under 8’s to play a wide game, with a ‘two pass after being tagged’ rule. The captain for the day Anastasia Heath had a real hunger for the ball, with some great catches and some great running forward, (the likes of which have not been seen since the coach first took up rugby …….Go Anastasia Heath!!!!!!).
Lymm The first game of the day dawned against Lymm. They were always going to be a hard side to beat, (beat them we did at the sevens tournament last year at Hoylake, so there is always hope……….!!!). The game was fast and Lymm were well drilled, however we got our first points on the scoreboard from a half way dash down the right hand wing from Aaron Gooch. With confidence up the blacks fought on bravely. Northwich continued to get points on the board from Bradley Williams, Connor Long, Luke Thompson and Damian Latham, (the latter of which, whose hip action when dodging a tag, resembled moves that the late Patrick Swayze would have been proud of!!!). Final score 7-5 to Lymm.
The second game was also against Lymm and we saw a momentous occasion!!! Bradley Williams not only has a sonic boom voice he also has sonic hearing!!!!!!!! Taking on board the words of the coach in training , the second game saw him hanging on the wing waiting for his two pass ball, his two pass ball arrived and so did Bradley……………. at the try line!!!!!! A MASSIVE green card to Bradley Williams and a MASSIVE green card to Luke Thompson for arranging the passing!!!!
Winnington Park Our final match of the day saw us facing our local adversaries Winnington Park. With some ‘Kings of Leon’ pre match drilling of run like ‘your bum is on fire’ and some ‘pumping’ in the form of ‘how hungry are you for the ball’, (thanks Luke I know we don’t eat the ball!!!), and with the coach stating, ‘if I don’t have to tell you to run forward then you will have done your job!), we took to the pitch following a Northwich ‘squeeze’.
It was a take no prisoners match; with tension running high throughout. The Blacks really took it to The Park in the first half, with some excellent attacking play and some even better tagging.
The Parks half time team talk must have been ‘Mega’, (maybe it was a sweetie bribe that did it!!), but The Park came out fighting in the second half, that caused The Blacks some frustrations!!!!! (At least we know we are ready for contact at Under 9’s!!!!). Our only try of the match came from Connor Long and the final score was 5-1 to Winnington Park. Upon the final whistle we got invited back to the club house for hot dogs. Of course not having played at the club ground and the coach being disorganised enough not to have the post code to hand, the techno heads got out their Blackberry’s to google the post code, Mr Heath and Mr Thompson you are duly appointed away fixture transport co-ordinators!!!!!
Our thanks go to the very welcoming coach from Lymm.
Game 1 & 2- Lymm Tries Aaron Gooch, Bradley Williams 3, Connor Long, Damian Latham 2, Luke Thompson
Game 3 Winnington Park
Tries, Connor Long

November 1st U8’s vs Congleton (Away) Draw 16-16 The day began with parents looking out their bedroom windows, seeing that it was absolutely lashing it down and hoping that the match would be cancelled. Karen then texted with the news - all seemed to be still on!
As everyone drove into Congleton the rain began to break and there was even a glint of sun and we all received a very warm welcome from Congleton.
The players were, Nathan Byrne, Bradley Williams, Ben Callaghan, Luke Thompson, Aaron Gooch, Imogen Heath, Damien Latham, Anastasia Heath, Thomas Furlong, Niall Costigan, Elliott Foulkes and we were pleased to be joined by Will Woodward from Under 7's.
Luke Thompson was Captain for the day and the game began with everyone looking as happy as pigs in mud (well they were covered in it...). Luke Thompson captained the way with some great steals and picks up from some balls that Congleton lost and Bradley Williams and Imy Heath must have had their porridge that morning as they had some great runs. Half way through the first half, the ball was thrown into space and Karen nearly became involved in the game and nearly picked up the ball with a view to assisting the team with a try……. (I think she forgot that she wasn't actually playing....and they were doing fine anyway) - Karen, we know the U8's are good, but remember you play with the ladies team - not the U8s. Nathan Byrne made some good space and helped in assisting his team mates with getting the ball to the try line. As the game moved on, Anastasia Heath made a fantastic run and it was only a matter of time before she made a try in the 2nd game.
In the 2nd game Thomas Furlong help to defend the match with some fantastic tagging. Bradley Williams found some good space in the 2nd game and also made some good tags. Ben Callaghan had some absolutely storming runs and managed to dodge his way around the opposition.
Game 1: Congleton 9, Northwich 10 (Aaron Gooch 1, Luke Thompson 2, Bradley Williams 3, Ben Callaghan 4)
Game 2: Congleton 7, Northwich 6 (Ben Callaghan 1, Bradley Williams 1, Damien Latham 1, Imy Heath 1, Anastasia Heath 1, Luke Thompson 1)
Thanks to Congleton for such a good, fair match and we look forward to meeting up with them again later in the season (hopefully the weather will be sunny and warm..... ??).

November 8th U8’s vs Winnington Park (Away) Draw 2-2 & Lost 10-5 After fighting for a parking space we all finally managed to make our way to the pitch where we were about to take on our rivals Winnington Park. The team consisted of Niall Costigan, Nathan Byrne, Bradley Williams, Conner Long, Elliot Foulkes, Luke Thompson, Ned Johnson, Damian Latham, Aaron Gooch and Thomas Furlong.
Training was underway when we were all called to the 1st pitch for a 1 minute silence as a sign of respect. The clubs chairman made a speech and all the teams linked arms which was good to see.
Once this had been done we all made our way back to our relevant pitch, team captain for the day was Ned Johnson and the matches commenced!!! The first game was fast and furious with a little bit of football rivalry thrown in, (Bradley Williams and Nathan Byrne play football with one of Winnington Parks players). The game was a draw with Bradley Williams scoring 2 tries, Nathan Byrne 1, Conner Long 1 and Aaron Gooch 1. However the second game was a different scenario with Winnington Park managing to beat us 10 - 5 (Aaron Gooch 1, Luke Thompson 2 and Bradley Williams 2)
There were a few words said between referee and coach but Sonic Boom was still evident and the boys were happy enough once they realised they would get sausage and chips in the club house!! It is true when they say the way to a man/boys heart is through his stomach!!!!

November 22nd U8’s vs Wirral (Away) Lost 12-9 Nathan Byrne was Captain for the game and was extremely accomplished at using the Sonic Boom that Karen had taught them previously, to get the team working together.
It was a truly brilliant game, with the team bonding together and really working the pitch - with the first half of each match being an uphill game in both senses and the second half being down hill (and the score isn't truly reflective of just how well they all played). There were some amazing runs by many members of the team and all took advantage of the second half being down hill - to gain some momentum.
All players were finding space and much improved passing to assist the try scorers.Tries were scored by: Nathan Byrne, Bradley Williams (3), Luke Thompson (2), Aaron Gooch, Damien Latham and Connor Long.

November 29th U8’s vs Sandbach (Away) Won 9-6, Lost 5-3 & 6-1 Making head or tail of the very wet soggy piece of paper that held the match details was no mean feat when trying to write a match report but I (Bradley’s Mum) eventually managed to fathom out what I'd written.
The first game was well played even though the boys were soaking wet and the ground very muddy. The score was 9-6 to Northwich with the following scoring tries. Conner Long 2, Thomas Furlong 4, Damian Latham 1, Immy Heath 1 and Nathan Byrne 1.
The second game was fast and furious with lots of good tagging from both teams. The end result was close although Sandbach just pipped us at the post winning 5-3. Good tries were made by Bradley Williams , Luke Thompson and Nathan Byrne. By the third game the team were getting cold and Sandbach won 6 - 1 with Ben Callaghan scoring our 1 and only try. Well done boys and girls, keep up that Sonic Boom !!!!

December 13th U8’s vs Ashton-on-Mersey Won 5-4 & Nant Conwy (Home) Lost 9-1 Northwich U8's vs Ashton-on-Mersey U8s (Home), Won 5-4 A match with lots of energy and high spirits - non of the players wanted to give anything away and both sides were determined to win. Northwich not only made the tries count, but demonstrated excellent defending and tagging. Tries were scored by: Damien Latham, Luke Thompson (2), Immy Heath and Bradley Williams
U8's vs Nant Conwy (Home), Lost 9-1 The score does not reflect just how hard the team fought to stay in the game. Nat Conwy had travelled a long way and showed much determination. Northwich defended well and although had some good runs, luck just wasn't on their side for this one.Try scored by Connor Long. Connor Long had a fantastic game and demonstrated speed and agility - probably his best game of the season - well done. Maddie Hayes-Clarke, new to the team, has certainly learnt the rules quickly and is certainly earning her place in the team.Nathan Byrne had a good match and defended extremely well and was in competitive mode for this match. Luke Thompson, Bradley Williams, Aaron Gooch and Damian Latham were passing well and making space.
Overall a tough couple of matches, but Northwich demonstrated some great tagging, making space and definitely showed resilience.
