Primary School Activities
Northwich have regular contact with many primary schools in the mid Cheshire area. As it is difficult for staff to find time in the curriculum for rugby Northwich coaches have provided coaching sessions after school for interested youngsters usually during ‘school club’ time. These sessions have focussed on Tag rugby with the sessions supplemented with the donation to the schools of rugby balls and tag belts via club or ‘Sport for All’ grant funding.

Tag Tournaments
To cement the skills learnt during the coaching sessions, all schools are invited to take part in an Annual Tag tournament. Usually held in July just before the school year closes, the tournament gives mixed teams of ten the opportunity to play against rivals from schools across Cheshire. These tournaments are designed in two tier league structure with no knockout phase. This means that all teams get an equal number of matches and can join in the award ceremonies at the end. Everyone who participates in the tournament receives a certificate. Teams winning their respective leagues are awarded a trophy. Winners of Pool A in the second round are considered overall winners and receive winners medals The tournaments are very popular events with support from teachers and parents alike.

In 2003 the club ran two tournaments in July for Year 5/6 children in both Northwich and Winsford areas. The Northwich tournament attracted 16 teams from 11 different schools and the Winsford tournament 8 teams from 7 schools. Overall nearly 250 children took part in the two events. Results of these tournaments as well downloadable reports are in the separate web pages - 2003 Annual Tag.

Later that year the club also ran a special celebration tag tournament alongside the Rugby World Cup (RWC) which was taking place in Australia during October and November 2003. This was run directly along the lines of the RWC event with a knockout structure with a total of 20 Year 3/4 teams organised into 4 groups of 5. To help increase awareness of the event, each school participating was given a RWC country to adopt and encouraged to run a project on that country prior to the event in October. Thanks to sponsorship Northwich were able to provide T-shirts for all participants in different colours each with their country name on the front. Again over 200 children took part in the event which attracted 20 teams from 17 different schools with medals and certificates being awarded by local Member of Parliament for Northwich, Mike Hall. Results of the event as well as photographs of the day are at our RWC pages.

In 2004 the club decided to extend the Annual Tag events to cover both Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 children and ran three tournaments in July. These were a Year 5/6 event for Northwich schools, a Year 3/4 event for Northwich schools and a Year 5/6 event for Winsford schools. 32 teams took part over the three events with over 300 children in total. Again results and photographs of these events are at our dedicated Annual Tag 2004 page.

The Club ran two tournaments in May and July 2005 2005 Tag and in 2006 - 2006 Tag.

The club would like to thank teachers and parents of the schools who regularly participate for their support. Links to those schools is given below.

Secondary School Activities
A number of secondary schools in the area offer rugby as part of their Physical Education curriculum and the RFU themselves offer different schemes and tournaments to encourage rugby e.g. the ‘Emerging Schools’ competition and the Daily Mail Cup tournament. Northwich Rugby Club therefore offer different types of resources to partner secondary schools in the area compared to those offered in Junior schools. These include :-
- Additional Coaching expertise
Specialist coaching support to compliment existing schools P.E. staff, where perhaps existing staff do not have the level of expertise, to cover training and/or matches when staff leave or are not available, or where there are teams with no suitable qualified member of staff. For example Northwich have recently won a ‘Sport for All’ award to provide additional support to promote girls rugby in the area and will be in schools coaching during normal curriculum or after school during the Autumn 2004 and Spring 2005.
Refereeing of school matches
Foundation or Society referees for key school cup, competition or important matches between local rivals.
- Support for representative rugby
Northwich coaches often participate in coaching of players who are put forward for representative squads like Vale Royal, leading to county honours and of course for Vale Royal in the Cheshire Youth Games.

In turn we also offer the opportunity for secondary pupils to further their own skills or experiences by actively participating in the club’s activities. For example pupils doing GCSE P.E. or leadership courses recently helped with our Rugby World Cup Tag tournament, and pupils taking a referee course are helping to referee junior and mini games each weekend.

Existing Northwich junior players come from many of the schools and colleges across Mid, North and West Cheshire. Here is a list of those schools and colleges and where appropriate the type of support that the club has provided and will be continuing to provide this season.
