President’s Day 2011 - Saturday 17th December. This year’s annual President’s Day will be on Saturday 17th December. As usual this will be a day to celebrate club glories and memories past and present as well as watch some great rugby and of course everyone is welcome to join us down at Moss Farm. This year the day will feature a North 1 West League with the 1st XV playing against Leigh with KO at 2.15 pm. Leigh are currently 5th in the league table only one point behind Northwich. So this promises to be a thrilling encounter. Before, during and after the match there will be refreshments available for children & adults alike.
As always the club will also be inviting sponsors and VIP’s and they will be provided lunch from 12.45 pm as the club’s guests. The Rt. Hon. Graham Evans (Northwich MP) will reply to Sam Naylor’s (Northwich Chairman) welcoming speech on behalf of the invited guests. After the game concludes, at around 4pm there will be a presentation of the man-of-the-match awards.
The bar will of course remain open after the game for beer & refreshments, and an opportunity to meet the players and hopefully celebrate a league win. Northwich U8s vs Bury at Sale Sharks vs London Irish game The first game of the season for the under 8’s was a small intimate affair, a small crowd gathered to watch the boys play, 35 parents, grandparents and siblings along with a few Northwich members joined the ranks of the Sale Sharks and London Irish masses to cheer the boys on, so all told around 7000 onlookers.
A few nervous faces sat in the stand before kick off but out on the pitch they were fantastic – with the instructions of the coach still ringing in there ears ( enjoy it, don’t be nervous, don’t look at the massive stand with thousands watching you ) Northwich hit the ground running with some impressive tagging followed by some fantastic ball retention which led to Logan L taking a pass from Tom W changing the angle and out pacing the covering defence for a score from halfway, next Tom R scored, picking up a dropped ball on his own try line, he didn’t wait for the whistle he just went with pace down the touchline jinking and stepping his way through and around the defence for a fantastic score, even the London Irish fans in the crowd stood and applauded. Next followed a spell of Bury pressure but the tagging and defensive work of Dan M, Will W and Ryan W kept them at bay and after some sound D, Northwich broke through Will W and Ryan W setting up Logan L for his second of the evening with a delightful step off the wing leaving 3 players on the ground grasping a thin air then between 2 more to score. Not to be out done Jack E scored next, he got the ball after some sound work by Liam C deep in his own half showed his strength by brushing aside a few would be tacklers and headed down the wing a jink here and step there saw him go clear for what was a well deserved try, Bury then scored close to the end after some great tagging by Ben J and to their credit Bury never gave up and the lads were a credit to the club with their attitude and sportsmanship so there it was handshakes all-round for what was the best performance by the team so far and a very proud day for the 3 coaches.
It was an evening full of things to be proud of and aside from what took place on the field there is one moment I feel that is worthy of a special mention, at 3.30 Sale Sharks phoned and said Bury only had 5 players could I lend them some players to make up the numbers, I neglected to mention this to the boys until 5 mins before kick off at this point I took a risk and asked for volunteers to play for the opposition, now when I was 7 I would have looked at the floor put my hands in my pockets and hid in the hope he didn’t pick me, different story with this set of lads 5 threw their hats in the ring and said they would play for Bury, so a massive thanks to Declan and Angus and Will W who help them and me out. - Tks Dan Lynch U8’s coach

Josh Cammiss is new 1st XV coach. Northwich RUFC is proud to welcome Josh Cammiss as the new 1st XV coach for 2011-12. Some of you may already know Josh as he is based locally and has represented Cheshire in both junior and youth sides winning the U20’s National Championship in 2007, and works as a coach for the RFU in the City of Manchester.
Josh is 6’ 5’’ and has played at second row for a number of clubs including Altrincham Kersal, Halifax, Macclesfield and Stockport. He also had a spell at Sale Sharks, represented North of England U18’s and was in the England U18’s clubs squad for 2 years.
Josh’s coaching experience began when he started working for the RFU and has been working towards the RFU Level 3 coaching certificate. As part of his role in Manchester he has been head coach of the Manchester Metropolitan University 1st XV as well as manager and coach of the Cheshire U18's squad. Josh has also been responsible for rugby development across the city in both schools and clubs.
“Although this is my first senior club coaching role, with my playing experience, occupation and knowledge of the league above, I strongly believe I have what it takes to lead what is already a very successful team to promotion”, said Josh. “Northwich is a fantastic club from juniors to seniors and I believe with it's club history and ethos, committed committee members, existing players and players coming in, it is a club that belongs in the national leagues, I'm privileged to be a part of the club and am looking forward to getting stuck in!, added Josh.
We’re delighted to have Josh on board”, said Sam Naylor, club chairman, “and hope his young talent, experience and enthusiasm will bring us that extra edge that we need to move into the National League, but also to inspire all players throughout the club”.

Try Rugby Day 7 Hits the Seventies! Often copied, but never bettered and always free!
The NRUFC Try Rugby Day Seven saw 73 children attend the holiday course held at Moss Farm on the 29th July. Such was the demand organisers had to operate 2 separate groups for children in the under 7s & 8s tag section which totalled 40.
Under 9s & 10s coaches Karen Gooch and Isaac McLellan oversaw the introduction to contact group with Tackle Bag Races, Bulldog, Slapsies, Ball Skills, Touch Rugby and Kicking for goal. RFU and Community Coach Chris Jones delivered a hierarchy of contact group to older children with the use of many tackle bags. Cameron commented that “there was no escape, there was no way through, all I could see was pads!”
Schools coach and TRD organiser Ian Grassby was ably assisted by Junior Colt Huw Lewis with the youngest tag section which involved games such as, Bulldog, Toilet Tag, Golden Eagle, Time Bomb, Monsters -versus- Aliens culminating in a penalty shoot out which saw William win the Cup and Henry the Plate competitions, both boys were presented with a ‘retro’ NRUFC training top.
The older tag group were directed by Dave Ryle (under 8s coach) and Rob Garner (under 15s coach). Laughs a plenty as children were challenged to Keep Ball, Dodge Ball, were later entertained by Manchester CRC Simon Clarke.
“It was probably the best TRD yet” commented organiser Ian Grassby, “One of the extra highlights was the talent contest at lunchtime, all the children wanted to take part. We had singers, robot dancers and comedians.
The best 3 acts all won prizes and Ross in Karen’s group won his prize for his effort in the tackle bag races.
Ian continued “I would like to thank the coaches who continue to give up their time for the Try Rugby Days. Without their commitment and professionalism these days couldn’t happen. The days 7 TRDs so far have attracted nearly 400 children and continue to grow in their popularity My aim would be to hit 100, we’ve done 70’s and 80’s but it would really be something to have 100 children take part”
For information on Try Rugby Day 8 on the 2nd September or any information regards junior rugby please contact I an on igrassby@northwichrufc.co.uk or 07752 447906.

Northwich RUFC - CWAC 2010 Club of the Year The club added to its collection of “Club of the Year Awards” as it was joint winner of the CWaC Club of the Year award for 2010. The club of the year award was the most hotly contested award this year with a pre-qualifying round leading to 5 finalists. However we were joint winners along with Boughton Netball Club. Junior Chairman Tomos Lewis was joined by Ian Grassby, Karen Gooch and Ken Houghton at the awards (pictured above), with Ian going up and collecting the award on behalf of the club. Our first Club of the Year award was presented to the then Junior Chairman, Simon Bridle in 2003, it is good to see that 7 years on we are still right up there with the best. January 2011
